It's easy to miss Mateo Cárdenas in a box score. He doesn't force shots, rarely turns the ball over, and his per-game numbers look modest next to more ball-dominant peers. Watch a full possession, though, and a different picture emerges.
Cárdenas reads help defense a beat before it arrives, and our tracking has him assisting on possessions other point guards in his class simply don't see. Club Obras' coaching staff has started running more of their offense through him as a result, a clear vote of confidence for a player his age.
At 190cm with room to fill out, the physical tools are there too. If his outside shot continues to develop at the rate it has over the past year, he profiles as one of the more complete floor generals to come out of Argentina in recent classes.
